Social Media is STUPID

By Susan Hamilton
18 Jul

It Takes an Online Community to Build Website Success.

Social media is a whole can o’ worms, isn’t it? Hard to know what everyone’s talking about – it’s like a foreign language. Tweets. Updates. Status. Walls. Whatever.

If you get it wrong, and everyone sees you do something wrong, that could hurt your reputation – maybe even make you look stupid! Totally NOT worth it, if you ask me.

What do those people do all day anyway, just b.s. instead of work? Who cares what they’re doing? I don’t.

Seriously, if I spend time in Facebook, I’ll waste HOURS just trying to figure out what I’m doing. Who has time for that?

It’s definitely a sign of our culture. A sign of the times. People are careless at work and all this tech-stuff makes them ignore real things.

Everybody’s just being tracked anyway. Social media is helping big brother spy on all of our activity, and we’re just letting it happen. Yeah. I hate social media, and I’m NOT going to waste MY time getting involved with all that.

Yeah, I could talk an hour about it all, but I don’t have time to learn it.

I SO do NOT care about other people, anyway. They don’t affect my business. What do I care what interests my customers? How could that ever effect me? I mean, even if I did know what they liked, what they talked about, or how they talked about other companies, I couldn’t EVER learn anything from that. I’m sure that connecting with my customers would never help me serve them better. I’m certain that I know EVERYTHING I could possibly know about my customers! They might ALL be using social media, but that doesn’t matter to me.

Why on earth would being tuned in to my customers and prospects make me a better business owner? How could that help me make more money?

Improve my message? Improve my business reputation?

ARE YOU KIDDING??

I have what people need and if they don’t call me for it or walk into my store for it, the economy is to blame. Obamacare, if you ask me. Now people are broke and the stock market looks like its gonna take another dip. Guess I’ll just be broke until some great legislation comes along, or Jesus comes back. We know the signs of the times. The end is near.

I’m just gonna complain about all those stupid people using that stupid social media, that’s what I’ll do. I remember when they introduced the first computers at my high school. I took typing that year. I’m NOT learning ANYTHING new. Not me.

I’m sure another boat will be by soon.

If you change your mind, here’s a resource that I think you’ll like.

I think social Media marketing is stupid. Check out this article that helps prove the point. http://strangelysocial.wordpress.com/2012/09/17/why-social-media-marketing-is-stupid/

I am not a spammer! I just want to join the conversation.

Noonie, obviously, neither of us really think social media marketing is stupid unless it has no point. Facebook and Twitter doesn’t need one more business of any type spewing how great they are over and over again. “Look at me and buy my products” doesn’t work anywhere – never has, never will.

You’re right that small businesses CAN handle it themselves, but many times they need some help getting started. Sometimes doing it right needs to be modeled. A kickstart – yes; periodic updates – no problem; guidance to improve engagement – absolutely; but being solely responsible for updates and interaction? It’s not enough for great engagement. Whether the company pays a social media marketing company or hires a 17 year old cousin as you mentioned in your post, it’s just not in the company’s best interest to have anyone outside the company to do it all. But, it’s also not in their best interest to ignore social media. Meet your customers where they already are.

      Thanks for chiming in!
